Emergencies

Call 911 for emergencies anywhere in Costa Rica. Public hospitals run emergency departments; many private hospitals do too.

The public system (CCSS)

The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS, often called “la Caja”) runs public clinics (EBAIS), area clinics and hospitals. Insured residents use it; visitors are generally treated in emergencies. Check current rules for non-insured patients with the CCSS.

Private care

Private hospitals and clinics are concentrated in the Greater Metropolitan Area around San José, with others in larger towns. Visitors often use private care and pay directly or through travel insurance.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies are common in towns, and pharmacists are licensed by the Colegio de Farmacéuticos. Follow the advice of the professional who treats you.
